Those Hog Farms…It’s Business as Usual
by John Wade, Public Policy Cluster Chair
Initiative 14, which the RMC supported and which passed with 54% of the vote, has not been implemented in such a way as to make much difference. Although the CDPHE has worked to establish appropriate regulations, there have been challenges to its authority to do so. The Governor and Commissioner of Agriculture have not been helpful, according to Sue Jarrett, rancher from Wray, who with John Wade represented Colorado at the Sierra Club-sponsored Clean Water Week in Washington in June. There will undoubtedly be legislation introduced to move toward effective controls. We need to watch for it (next P&P), and work with Clean Water Action and Jim Martin of EDF so that we can meet this challenge to public health, family sized farm operations, and rural communities.
